Pro & Cons of being a work from home mom

Hello all,
As you might have seen, I have been taking a break from blogging for a while due to going through some rough things. I needed to mourn the loss of my dog and just find my happiness again. Well, I’ve mourned and cried and cried some more. It’s still not any easier for me and I’m still not use to not having her here. It’s even worse seeing how sad my other dog has been not having her here. He carries her ball around when normally, he would chew it up. Any who, I’m not here to talk about that- I was just giving y’all an update. I am here to tell you the pros and cons of being a work from home mom.

In November of 2018, I was offered a job working from home doing tech support for a security monitoring company. This is my first work from home job, so I was pretty excited and thought it was going to be the best job ever since I didn’t have to leave my house (I’m a home body). Well, come to find out, there are cons to this kind of job as well as there are pros. Here are my pros and cons.

Pros & cons (1)

Money

Pro: You save a ton of money on commuting back and forth to work every day.
Con: Yeah, saving money is great, but you start to go stir crazy after a while.

Daycare Costs

Pro: You may be able to eliminate the cost of daycare which we all know isn’t cheap.
Con: Eliminating outside daycare could make you less productive while working.

Distractions

Pro: Not having to worry about annoying chatty co-workers and also unnecessary meetings are greatly reduced.
Con: You personal life can slowly make it’s way present in your work life.

Emotional Health:

Pro: The added flexibility make enable you to make better, more positive life changes.
Con: The feeling of isolation can lead into unhealthy habits.

Kids

Pro: You get to spend more time with your kids.
Con: Your kids are always around and don’t really understand the fact that they can’t go into your office when you are working.

Bathrooms

Pro: You don’t have to use a public bathroom or share with anyone.
Con: You spend more money on toilet paper.

Resting time

Pro: You don’t have to get up a few hours before your shift to get ready and get to work on time.
Con: You know you are working in your house and that is where your bed is and knowing that makes you super sleepy.

Uniforms

Pro: NO UNIFORMS! This is nice. You can literally wear pajamas all day.
Con: You forget what real clothes are and look like a bum all the time. (Some might think this is a downfall, but I honestly don’t mind. I hate wearing pants anyways.)

Food

Pro: You save money on food, like a lot of money. Forgetting your lunch is never an issue.
Con: You tend to eat a lot more because you are near your kitchen. (Also not really a con for me. I have a fast metabolism, so eating a lot never affects me.)

Work space

Pro: You don’t have to share your work space with other germ filled humans who like to sneeze all over everything without covering their mouth.
Con: You can risk your work space getting damaged by your kids or animals.

As you can tell, there are pros and cons to working from home just like everything else in life. I however don’t mind the cons, because I’m a total homebody. I don’t really get stir crazy or miss being “Social” because I’m not much of a social person anyways. I definitely agree though, that you have to really be okay with being home all the time to want to work from home. If you get stir crazy easily, then don’t torture yourself by working from home, it wouldn’t be good for your mental health.

Do you work from home? If so, what are your pros and cons?

  2. I also work from home and couldn’t agree more with your post! In fact it is good for our family but it takes a lot of self-discipline.

  3. I have been working at home for six years and I think it was the best decision I have ever taken in my life. Actually few of my family members know that I work from home and those that are aware know not to contact me during working hours.

  5. I have certainly thought of working at home with what has been going on with me. Lots of difficult things with my parents and needing to take care of them. I could use the ability to make money more from home.

  8. I would like to work at home. Besides being able to take a break for a while when we are tired, we can also play and spend time with our children.

  9. I’ve worked from home since my oldest was born almost 6 years ago. I love being able to work for myself and on my own schedule. I’ve done jobs that I work for others, and it wasn’t working since I had the kids here. Working from home isn’t always easy, but I love it!

  13. I joke with my husband sometimes that I’d like to be a work at home dog mom. However, your cons kind of scared me just a little. I think I’d end up becoming a hermit if I worked from home, yikes.

  15. If working from home also means being staying at home mommy then my PRO is you finally can spend time cleaning the house because you have time to do so CON the kids destroy it in 3.4 seconds after you clean the house.
