MONDAY RANTS.

I’ve never been bothered enough by something that I felt the need to rant about it publicly, until now. This really irked me.

Back story.

About a year ago, I started cleaning houses as a side job and I’ve gained a few regular clients. I love to clean so I enjoy this. Well, yesterday I was at a new clients house cleaning when I get a phone call from someone who also wants their house cleaned and wanted it done that day. Since I was already at another clients house cleaning, I didn’t want to go to another one the same day because my back was already hurting, not this lady told me that all she needed done was light cleaning. Light cleaning is dusting, cleaning clutter, sweeping/vacuuming common walkways and trash, keep in mind.

This lady was practically begging me to clean for her because she has company coming into town this week. I said okay, I’ll do it since it’s light cleaning. I told her that I would text her my rates and after I did, she texted back saying, “I use to pay my old housekeeper $75 a week to fully clean all rooms and all I need you to do is light cleaning, so keep that in mind.” I told her that I would clean for her for that price this once since it’s light cleaning. I charge per hour normally.

Fast forward a few hours.

I get to her house and they send me upstairs and direct me to the master bedroom bathroom once I finished in there, I asked what else needs a touch up and she said with a blank look on her face, “All the rooms…”

A few more hours later…

I finished 3 bedrooms and two bathrooms upstairs and none of which was light work. I fully cleaned them like she kept asking me to. Changed bedding, dusted, windows, mirrors, showers, tubs, toilets, sinks and swept and mopped floors. At this point, it’s about 6:30pm and I’m exhausted because this is my second house of the day and I had been cleaning since 10am… Non stop…

Irritation set in.

I had literally been cleaning all day on my day off… I didn’t eat all day and I didn’t even see my kid the entire day. That’s not an exaggeration, she was asleep when I left to clean the first house and she was already in bed when I got home after 9:30pm. So by this point, I’m irritated. I’m overly exhausted and I’m starving.

Pushed though it.

After cleaning the upstairs, I cleaned the entire downstairs. A bathroom, living room, dining room and kitchen. Finally, I was done and was able to go home…

She handed me $75. That’s it. I was there for 6 hours and fully cleaned 8 rooms and that’s all she paid me. You’d think that she’d be understanding and see how much work I was actually doing or the fact that I spent more time at her house than my own and pay me more… Then after that, she tells me that she needs me once a week to clean and I said, maybe we could work something out.

Fast forward to the day after.

I texted her to let her know that I would not be coming this weekend because it’s my step daughters birthday party and I also let her know that what she had me do (8 full rooms) wasn’t light cleaning and that if she wanted me to continue doing that kind of work for her, that I would charge her my rate per hour from now on. And she said, “I wish I had 8 rooms. Okay I’ll let you know if there’s need for you.” If there’s need for me… Funny, I remember her begging me to clean her house in short notice and then telling me that she needs need done a week… She thought it was okay to give me crap okay for all the work I did because her last housekeeper accepted that amount. Well, I’m not that last housekeeper and I don’t work for money that I can’t even pay my phone bill with…

Rant over.

Anyone else ever have incidents like this? If so, share them with me in the comments.

  1. I hate people like that. Petty me would go back and half-ass it for the amount she paid you. But real me is like don’t waste your time.

Sometimes I wish we could yelp review clients and customers.

But hey… if you ever just want to clean for fun gimme a call. I can’t pay you $74 but I can feed you haha
